I knew one thing was for certain this evening and that was the special dining experience that was ahead of us at The Inn at Ship Bay.  Many of my new friends on Orcas Island have encouaged me countless times to come here and experience the culinary treasures Chef Geddes and his talented team of chefs create.

Set atop a bluff overlooking the blue waters of Ship Bay, we settled down at our table and took in the views.  Picture yourself dining on the deck of a charming historical farm house built in the 1860′s complete with sweeping views of the bay at sunset.  That was the experience everyone here had that evening and I can tell you without a doubt, it would be an experience I would never forget.

Glancing over his menu, hubby looks up at me and asks, “How will we ever decide?”

“I know . . . let’s ask Chef Geddes to decide for us.  What do you think?”

He thought that was an excellent idea indeed :)

After our incredible dinner we took a stroll around the property enjoying the manicured gardens when we realized that we were amid an heirloom pear, apple and plum orchard.  I later discovered that these orchards were here from the beginning and were a part of the cornerstone of Orcas Island’s agricultural economy thanks to Michael Adams who built the farmhouse and established the property in the 1800′s.

The grounds here are awe inspiring from the vegetable and herb garden to the fruit trees – it’s no wonder everyone has been encouraging me to come out and visit.

I am so happy we did.

Here on Orcas Island, down below Turtleback Mountain is where you will find Turtleback Farm Inn.

We felt very lucky to have been able to spend some time here as well as meeting Bill and Susan Fletcher who are the proud owners of this beautiful farm and charming Farm House and Orchard House.  If peace, quiet and sweeping views are something you are after, this is the place to be.

On Island for over 20 years Bill and Susan take pride in creating an environment of complete tranquility for their lucky guests.  Susan’s gourmet breakfasts are also quite amazing from her breakfast crepes to corn waffles and many savories as well.

Flipping through Susan’s cookbook I am completely inspired.  She uses only the freshest local ingredients and the combinations of flavors that she develops, well, I could hardly wait to return to the Airstream to prepare some goodies.  In her book the recipes are clear, concise and the pages are full of so many cooking tips and funny little anecdotes that made me smile.  Deep history about Orcas Island also fills these pages and I can say that this book has a home in my handbag and I carry it everywhere.

How lucky we were to be able to be here.

“Can we go and see Chompers mommy?” B asked

On our way went to explore this magical place . . .

~ I prepared these ricotta tartines with inspiration from Susan’s cookbook

Easy peasy sweet roasted fruit:

The sweet roasted fruit was sprinkled with sugar and placed in a 400 degree oven for 1/2 an hour.  Cut the rhubarb so it creates a bed for the other fruits to lay on top of.  Take 2 cups of marscapone and a handful of chopped dried crystallized ginger and mix together in a separate bowl.  The longer this mixture sits in the fridge, the better :)  Once scooped onto the warm fruit it melts and turns this simple recipe into something amazing.

Bon appetit!

Could you guess how much we love the islands?  Somehow we are always drawn back here.  What a better place for us to ring in the New Year than to return back to peaceful Orcas Island which is the biggest of all the San Juan Islands here in Washington State.  Peace, after all, is what we were after.

We mixed it up a bit this year, a few nights in our Airstream and a couple of nights at The Outlook Inn.  On one of our many strolls through Eastsound, I would always remind hubby how much I would love to stay at The Outlook Inn.  If the New Leaf Cafe (The Outlook Inn’s cafe) was amazing as it was, surely The Outlook Inn would be just as superb.  Hubby knew that, so he and B surprised me.   I was very excited!

Our room was completely charming, quiet and had the most incredible view from the balcony.   A kitchenette, charming bathroom complete with jetted tub, heated floors and towel warmers.  All of their personal care products come from New Zealand and contain Manuka Honey, my latest obsession.  Coincidence?

Our New Years Eve Room at The Outlook Inn on Orcas Island

Upon waking the next morning and feeling very refreshed (the bed and fluffy duvet and pillows were so comfy), we took a trip to the beach where B could beachcomb and  search for baby dungeness crabs (and gently set free of course) and hubby and I could enjoy a quiet and peaceful day.  It was a chilly clear day with the most amazing crisp salt air.  We felt so good.  So refreshed!

Beachcombing on Orcas Island

Since the New Leaf Cafe is closed until February, we brought along our “Airstream Look-a-Like,” portable COBB grill to prepare our New Year’s Eve celebratory dinner.  A simple feast of a seafood medley using just a few ingredients so the true flavors of the seafood would shine.

Catch and Release Crabs at Crescent Beach, Orcas Island

I knew that Kyle at Orcas Homegrown Market would have an incredible selection of seafood.  Clams, oysters and endless varieties of salmon.  We chose a beautiful fillet of king for our feast that evening.  We picked up our seafood and headed back to the Inn.  The holiday lights that adorned the shops and boutiques in town were sparkling so beautifully on this chilly night in town.

Fresh Seafood from the Orcas Island Home Grown Market

Back at The Outlook Inn, I brought all of our ingredients straight to the picnic table perched atop a grassy hill with the most peaceful view.  As I began to prepare our dinner, hubby and B headed down to the seashore to explore but not before declaring “we are so hungry!” to me.  No worries, this was such a quick and easy meal to prepare.  We would be enjoying our meal in no time.

I could see B turning over rocks searching for his baby crabs as I went along preparing dinner . . .

Seafood Medley at the Outlook Inn, Orcas Island, WA

A seafood medley was in store for us.

Salmon fillets:  with spinach, tomatoes, beans and Parmesan cheese baked “en papillote” style (fancy French term for baked in a pouch).  Put your “en papillote’s,” on a hot grill, covered and cook for 15 minutes.  After 15 minutes, remove from your grill and set aside (they will continue cooking).  You may choose to add salt, but we did not as the sauce (below) was an incredible accompaniment to the salmon.

Clams and oysters in a garlic, butter and white wine sauce:  melt a stick of salted-butter in a shallow pan on your grill, add sliced garlic (to your taste) and then add your clams and drape your oysters along the edges of the pan.  I used about two pounds of clams and six medium sized oysters.  Cover and cook for 2 minutes — some clams will be open and some will not  — add a splash of wine and continue cooking for another few minutes until clams are all open (discard the ones that don’t open).  Use a butter knife to pry the oysters open (which will not be opened — stubborn they are!)

Sprinkle your clams and oysters with chopped parsley and serve with crusty bread (I forgot to buy bread — oh how heavenly it would have been to soak up all the juices).

Bon appetit :)

Bon Voyage and a Happy 2012 to you :)

How exciting!  B received this beautiful postcard in the mail from a couple who had found his bottle. If you don’t recall the story of his message in a bottle, you can read about it here.

The letter reads:

“Dear Bradley,

How exciting for us to find your bottle and wonderful note (fabulous drawing!) on the beach on Orcas Island!!  We made ourselves wait two whole days to open it – until we just died of curiosity :)  Thank you for creating such a fun adventure for our Orcas Thanksgiving getaway.  We were here without our children and grandchildren, so your magic, mysterious bottle gave us quite a thrill (and you have beautiful handwriting, too!).  You are obviously a very special boy :)

Jeff and Mary”

B was writing a letter.  But not just any letter.  This letter was special.  This letter was “magical with its possibilities.”  It was going to be put inside of a bottle and set adrift out to sea.

“Do you think it will go to Japan?”  B asked me as he looked up from his letter.  “Possibly . . .” I said smiling at him.  I was in the Airstream kitchen preparing a turkey sandwich for lunch that would have a sweet and tart cranberry sauce layer over some cream cheese, oh and sunflower seeds too.  I put down my spatula and went over to him.

“Wherever this bottle shall land, it was meant to be.  Maybe it will float all the way to Japan or maybe it will float over to Lopez Island.  Maybe it will float all the way to Australia and land on the beautiful white sand beaches and along the way, maybe your bottle will experience dark and scary ocean storms and float up and down over super high waves.  Maybe it will become a friend of a fish, or a big whale or maybe it will just float along and be warm from the shining sun.  Whoever finds it, I think will feel so lucky too.  Would you be excited if you found a message in a bottle?”

B sat there looking at me with his eyes big and wide.  He quietly resumed working on his letter being extra careful with the spelling of his words and making sure everything was perfect.

“Do you like it mommy?” he proudly lifted up his letter to show me.  “It’s perfect!” and I meant it.  It was the perfect letter, ever.

“Now, let’s go for a walk and set your bottle out to sea . . .”

Doe Bay Resort and Bradley's Message in a Bottle

The bottle was launched.  B picked a spot, aimed for it and was happy with the outcome.  It landed with a big splash and began to slowly float it’s way out to sea.  I took out my zoon lens on my camera and took about 100 pictures of the bottle slowly floating away . . .

“Now we wait,” I said.  We watched the bottle bob up and down and work it’s way out to sea and then decided it was time to go.  Afterall, we did have a turkey sandwich waiting for us in the Airstream kitchen.

Turkey and Cranberry Sandwich

Rustic bread, some arugula, thick cut organic turkey and my very own cranberry sauce.  Don’t forget the cream cheese and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds (we love the roasted and salted on our sandwiches).

If you would like the recipe for my cranberry sauce you can find it here.  I made this when we had our very first Airstream Thanksgiving Dinner.  Which, by the way, we are going to have again.  I love celebrating Thanksgiving in our Airstream in the San Juan Islands and using all the local and fresh ingredients the island farms have to offer.

Could you ever imagine a more peaceful place on earth?  This is the garden at Doe Bay on Orcas Island.  Our Airstream is very nearby and one morning B and I awoke to the most beautiful sound.  The sound that we heard was angelic in nature and it was very distant.  We were curious so we decided to go for a walk and see where it was coming from.

We approached this sign . . .

The music was coming from here.  From the garden.  They play beautiful music for their vegetables and flowers. Everyone was happy here and the sun was shining.  We were warm.  Happy.  Relaxed.

B was in awe with the Black Star hens . . .

Heather is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to gardening and taking care of the hens.  She has taught B how to collect the eggs and keep track of them as well as givng me some great pointers to use in my own garden come next summer (can hardly wait!).

Anacortes-to-San Juan Islands Ferry

We are excited.  We are happy.  Finally we are back in the beautiful San Juan Islands in our Washington State.  We caught the early morning ferry in Anacortes and arrived at our destination:  Orcas Island — specifically, Doe Bay Resort.

Doe Bay Resort, Orcas Island

We are excited to explore this part of the Island.  As you may recall, last year we were here.  As much as we miss it there, it is nice to explore new grounds and learn new things.  I prepared a simple Italian dinner of gnocchi with oven roasted tomatoes and home made tomato sauce from my garden last year.  Here are some pictures of my home garden where you can see how many tomatoes I had one particular season.  I roasted almost all of them in my oven with garlic and olive oil.  Alongside this dish was sauteed sole in butter.  That’s all.  So simple.  Oh and a little gourmet salt of your choice (we like crunchy Maldon Sea Salt).  The recipe for this dish will follow shortly, but please feel free to email me in the meantime for an email version if you can’t wait :) xoxo

It is very peaceful here.  Could you guess?

I hope that if you ever visit Orcas Island you will visit beautiful Doe Bay Resort.  If you do come, plan on leaving very relaxed.  This is where Heaven meets the Earth.

B was having such a good time playing on the beach searching for crabs and critters under the rocks all while running around and laughing.  I knew he would be sleeping well that night.  To keep him going in the meantime, I prepared a Mediterranean tuna salad wrap.  This was super quick and easy to prepare and the flavors in this were amazing.  Light (not too much mayonaise) and fresh and so flavorful.  If you happen to make this, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  I should mention that if you eat this outdoors on a beautiful sunny day, it may taste even better.

Our trip to Vancouver Island in Canada with our destination being Tofino was such an incredible trip. We met so many wonderful people and everyone was so genuinely nice here.  We caught the ferry from Sidney in Canada and then returned home to Orcas Island via the Friday Harbor ferry (pictured below is our Airstream in the waiting line).

When we finally unhitched at West Beach Resort, B and hubby went exploring on the beach and I began the tedius, but yet relaxing task of cracking the remainders of our freshly caught Dungenous Crab B and hubby caught while on their fishing trip with Lance.   I was ready to prepare some Dungeonous Crab Cakes and I wanted these to be simple because  I wanted the crab to the be the star!  Less is more with this recipe — you could even omit the celery but I wanted some kind of “crunch” amongst the delicate crab meat.  Maybe a freshly diced red bell pepper would be good instead of the celery — the possibliites are endless and all depend on what kind of mood you are in.

It is good to be home on Orcas Island and we are really looking forward to exploring the many farms this beautiful Island has to offer the public.  B can’t stop talking about visitng a farm with chickens and baby lambs — maybe we will!  All I know so far is that the folks here on this Island are so warm and welcoming!
