Early morning sailings to the San Juan Islands are such a treat (once I am fully awake) (and after plenty of coffee).  We rise at a ridiculous early hour to make certain we catch one of the first ferry sailings from the mainland to the islands.  A schedule like this ensures that we #1, do not get stuck in awful traffic and #2 we have the first full day all to ourselves.  The night before I am busily preparing breakfast burritos for the boys to enjoy on the drive up where it’s only us on I-5 and not another single soul in sight — it’s rather bizarre to have the entire interstate to yourself, but I love it.

Once on board the ferry, we sleepily make our way up onto the main deck and seek out some comfortable seating where we can catch up on some zzz’s while being rocked to sleep by the gentle swaying of the ferry and the rhythmic hum of the powerful engines.  The ferry sailing is around an hour and a half which gives us a good snooze window. Birthday Flowers via J5MM.com // #GoRVing #Airstream

It’s official.  I am 44 years old.  And for the record, I am very much enjoying my 40s.  Living, loving, working, exploring, cooking, laughing, learning (always learning), being . . .  it all seems to just get better with time.  I am also much smarter than I was in my 30s, 20s, etc.  Thank goodness.

My boys are good to me on my birthday, always have.

“Honey, what would you like to do for your birthday?” hubby asks . . .

“I’d like to go and visit our Airstream and spend the weekend with her,” I replied.

A Taste of Washington's Coast for #GoRVing via J5MM.com #Airstream

If you haven’t had the chance to visit Grayland Beach State Park along Washington’s coast, it is a trip that I highly recommend.  There you are greeted with beautiful sites — some boast privacy, some are very spacious and all are within close proximity to trails that take you straight to the beach and ocean.

I had the honor to write about our recent trip to Grayland Beach State Park for GoRVing.  There I shared our experiences of  razor clamming for the first time along with catching  Dungeness crab and enjoying starry nights.

Here is a direct link to my piece and I truly hope you enjoy it – and most of all, I hope it inspires you to find your Away :)

Carrot Soup for the Soul via J5MM.com // Airstream Kitchen

“How much longer daddy?  Can you see Disney World? Can you see it???”

As a little girl, a child of of the 70’s, sitting in the backseat of my parents big brown Pontiac Le Mans, it was a guarantee that these questions of mine were routinely asked at precise intervals throughout entire road trips. This particular road trip was taking us from Dayton, Ohio to Florida – home to Walt Disney World.  It was the summer of 1976. Happy 2014 from my Airstream Kitchen to yours xoxo

It’s a tradition to celebrate Christmas Eve at my brick and mortar home and have the Bennett family come over.  As usual, my sister-in-law and I get wrapped up in heavy conversation about cooking, growing veggies, sewing and so much more.  I simply adore her — she is such an inspiration.

Such an inspiration in fact that I could hardly wait to try a bread recipe that she’s been baking now for quite some time in her dutch oven at home.  She made it sound so easy (she doesn’t even measure!) but the basic premise is baking bread at a high heat in the dutch oven as to replicate the “steaming” process that takes place in the higher end ovens found in fancy bakeries.

This loaf of bread you see below was my first attempt  — I too did not measure and it came out delicious.  But tonight as I sit here typing this, my home smells so Heavenly as I made a second loaf so I could measure my ingredients this time around and share the recipe with you.

road to Jackson Hole

The drive from Ketchum, Idaho to Jackson Hole, Wyoming was quite a long drive, but pleasant.  We enjoyed the big skies and puffy clouds as well as landscapes that seemed to go on forever.  We also spied some other Airstream’s during our trip which always ended in happy smiles and waves ♥ Continue reading »
