A cabin built by hand.  Log by log, one by one, all put in place by a brother, father, sister and mother.  It took over ten years to build this cabin.  Gramps even wired the cabin himself.  The Bennett cabin is a family legacy.

We recently paid a visit to the cabin and I felt lucky to have my smart, funny and beautiful daughter come along. She’s been coming to the cabin since she was six years old. Today she is 24. The cabin holds special memories for her and I am so grateful for that.

Also in these pictures, you can not see, is my future grandbaby.  This may sound corny, but I love that the little one, not even born yet has been to the cabin.

Life is a beautiful thing ♥

Happy Holidays

  1. Hi Monica – I just wanted to say “Thank you”. Thank you for sharing your life and your loves. You’ve inspired me in so many ways. I am picking up my brand new Airstream and am taking it out, along with my two dogs, for the first time on Saturday. I can’t tell you how nervous and excited I am. San Francisco is not the best RV spot – but I look forward to visiting my daughter in Bellevue, WA soon. Anyway, I am so glad I found your blog. Thank you, thank you. Teresa

    • Awe Teresa — my heart fluttered when I read this. Thank you so much and a big congratulations to you and your new Silver Girl. Here’s to many non-stop outdoor adventures in the big wide open beautiful land of ours xoxo

  2. What a perfect, perfect place! Your photography is so lovely. Thank you for sharing- and congrats on your future grand baby! I’m about 2 months away from having my first baby.

  3. Once again lovely pictures and an amazing cabin. Wow……..if we had the money(& a cabin) you could design, furnish and make all the recommendations you wanted. We wouldn’t quibble over colors, placement of furniture, too many of these/not enough of those. Just make it “ready” and we’d be the happiest owners around. You have amazing artistic talents. Thanks for the pre-Christmas uplift.

  4. The cabin is just so perfect. I am pretty sure you live on a different planet where the lighting is perfect. At any rate, congratulations on being a Grandma so soon. I am sure you will be great in your new role. I do have a bone to pick with you however. Stop making me want another house. The Airstream and this old house should be enough. A cabin like that would be mighty nice though. Thanks for the inspiration as always. Happy Holidays.

    • Hi buddy !!! So good to see you here! Also, I have been living in guilt city for not getting back to you yet re: Montana. SOON, I promise. Oh and I can I just say? Your comments always make me smile. The cabin is pretty awesome I have to admit, maybe one day when you and the fam come out, we could come out here. Just a thought and something to jot down for a future bucket list item. HUGS to you friend xoxo

      • We will park the Troustream on your land and check out the cabin. I’m in. No need for guilt over something so trivial. We have plenty of time. You will be pleased to know that I am working on a long post about my house and the amazing story I have uncovered regarding its origins. I am writing it for a book on historic homes in Ohio. Here is a hint. The current 1916 expansion was built with money from the invention of the first electric self starter bought by Cadillac in 1910. The original house was built in 1810. Dayton, Ohio was like the Silicon Valley for inventors in the early 1900’s. I am so excited to discover that I own a piece of that legacy. We just thought it was pretty.

  5. Hello, Monica,
Uncle Jim here in Denver. What lovely pics of the “cabin” We have always enjoyed the visits with O&M there! I haven’t been able to reach either of them and I don’t have Jeff’s current cell number. If he could call me or e-mail would be much appreciated. Thank you.
    Jim B.

  6. What a lovely post..on so many levels…your photography is always a special treat. The warm fire warmed my soul, and when I read about you becoming a grandmother….that was the best. Congratulations. Yes, I understand about having your new grandbaby visit the cabin even before its appointed time. The memories that your daughter carries are certainly shared and felt by this soon to be grandchild. You are certainly going to have a wonderful 2016.

  8. Wow, that is a beautiful cabin. And you have taken such lovely pictures that reminded me of my grandmother’s home when I was a child. Sitting in front of that wood stove, after spending the entire morning hiking in the snow, and sledding down the mountain, is one of my favorite memories! They only moved out when my grandfather could no longer take care of the repairs, due to Parkinson’s disease.

  9. Que fotos lindas, eu amo visitar esse blog e me sentir aí nesses lugares tão maravilhosos e aconchegantes!

  10. Love the cabin pictures and those of your family! You just can’t believe how much love one can have for those grand babies! My first came the day before Thanksgiving and my world hasn’t been the same since! I’ve fallen in love all over again! Best to you and your family in the new year and maybe someday our airstreams will meet!

  11. That’s a beautiful log cabin! It’s amazing that your family was able to build it by hand. I’m sure that your family will love visiting the cabin for years to come, and that the memories and stories will be passed down through the generations. Thanks for sharing this piece of your life with us!

    • I think that’s what makes the cabin extra special — that it was built by the Bennett family. Orv, my father in law even wired and plumbed the cabin himself. I’m glad I was able to share it with you, thank you for your comment!

  12. I was looking online for a picture of the Bennett log cabin in Winterset, Iowa, It is located in the Winterset city park, along with one of the covered bridges of Madison County. I am planning to make a landscape quilt with the picture. In the process, I came across your log cabin and loved the pictures. I would like to know more of your family history to see if you may be related to the Bennett’s in Iowa. I am one of 13 siblings, my great grandparents had 16 children and my great-great grandparents had 18 children. My grandparents were George & Belle Bennett (8 children) and some of the last persons to live in the log cabin after their farm house burnt down. They lived in the Bennett log cabin for several months while they rebuilt the family home. There is a Bennett one room school house located in West Des Moines, Iowa. There is also a Bennett cemetery about 10 miles south of Winterset where a lot of history is buried. Would like to hear more from you and your family to see if there is a connection. If possible, we have a family reunion the first Sunday in June at the Winterset park, and if you could make it, we would love to visit with you.
Thank you for the beautiful pictures, and congratulations on your new grandchild, I have been blessed with eight and feel so richly blessed.
    Beverly (Bennett) Barry
