Matt Carter, our guide — from Deschutes River Outfitters showing me how it’s done.  Matt is a super talented angler and has been featured in many magazines and recently was featured on the cover of Fly Fisherman.  In addition, each summer he travels to Mongolia as a fly fishing guide.  Kinda crazy if you ask me, but follow your passion I say and this man certainly does :)

DeschutesRiverOutfitters_1 (23 of 54)It’s a great time to relax or keep on fishing from the shore // guess who chooses to snooze? XOXO

Coconut Thai chicken kebabs grilled riverside atop a bed of delicious kale and carrot salad.  Let’s not forget the heavenly grilled garlic bread alongside . . . we devoured all of it :)

Nate teaches me how to identify the different bugs that the fish are feeding on in the river.  Match the bugs to what is in my fly box he tells me.  This lesson along with so many others throughout the day has turned me into a very fine angler I must say!

DeschutesRiverOutfitters_1 (38 of 54) DeschutesRiverOutfitters_1 (37 of 54)We floated 39 miles down this glorious river today.  We wanted to experience what it would be like to do a typical three day float in just one day (because #1 we were short on time and #2 we could absolutely NOT pass up this experience floating the Deschutes River).

On a more realistic level — Deschutes River Outfitters offers riverside glamping following a day (or two, three, four, etc.) of fishing and floating the Deschutes River.

Now, this is not your typical camping set up.  This is true glamping I tell you.  Nate explains to me:

“Monica, you can stand up in our tents, they are spacious and roomy.  We provide cots to sleep upon so you are not sleeping on the ground.  We prepare and set up everything for you and we cook delicious gourmet food for you.  Restrooms are plentiful here along the river so if your skiddish about using any other than a real restroom, you need not worry (because I told him, I was not a fan of mother nature’s toilets, lol).”

Meanwhile, back at camp, we sit outside and reflect upon our most beautiful day.

We were one with nature.

We caught and released some of the most beautiful trout I had ever seen . . .

and we relaxed and soaked in the beautiful scenery around us.

I also laughed.  SO hard.  Did I mention that Nate Turner should have been a comedian in his other life?  That sweet Nate had me in stitches laughing so hard.  Such an easy and fun guy to hang out with on so many levels.  Plus he’s super smart about the area.  It’s no wonder that with him and Matt, their combined experience floating the Deschutes River beats any other fly fishing company out there. HANDS DOWN.  No question.

Thank you Nate for making me laugh.

Thank you Nate for teaching me how to fish and become a better angler.

Thank you Matt for teaching my boys how to become better anglers and for your delicious gourmet cooking!

But most of all, thank you for the memories.  I heart you both so very much !  This trip will remain in my sweet memory forever.

XOXO

Monica
